What is Mommy Nutrition? It is a holistic approach to living and feeling well; geared towards women in their childbearing years living in Northern Virginia. It is not a diet, or any strict manner of eating or exercising; it is a balanced approach to bringing all aspects of your life into complete health. Our approach to nutrition is unique; it recognizes your physical activity, spirituality, career and relationships as your "primary food", and puts great emphasis on these core life components. They are the things that truly "feed" you; and your secondary food is what your actually body actually consumes as food or drink. By inviting health and balance into your primary food life, it is much easier to make better decisions for your well-being with your secondary food choices.

I received my training at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, in New York City, the largest nutrition school in the world. It was a profound experience and I feel so fortunate for having had the experience of attending school there. Each week we heard live lectures from amazing guest teachers and speakers such as, Deepak Chopra, Dr. Andrew Weil, Dr. Oz, Sally Fallon Morrell, and many more. I wholly feel it prepared me to bring superior health into my life; but it also taught me how to support others to do so as well. 

My journey into health has been just that, a well-lived journey! I was always a thin and active child that enjoyed playing many sports.  Despite our family growing up eating a standard American diet, I was always a relatively healthy child and teenager. In college, I suffered an eating disorder and spent most of my twenties trying to heal my relationship with food. I tried several different diets, including becoming a vegetarian, and combined that with intense exercise. Fortunately, I eventually found my way to yoga, which began the healing from within.

Years later, after I thought I had "health" all figured out, my weight started creeping up again after my miscarriage. I was so mentally occupied with getting pregnant again, that at the time, I didn't even realize it! I then got pregnant with the twins and gained a whopping almost 70 lbs. throughout the pregnancy! I topped out, on the day I gave birth, at 216 lbs! Which is a number that's very familiar in our household because my husband doesn't like to let me forget it! I was once again, humbled by what I really knew about health and began reading and searching...again. 

I worked hard to get the weight off while still breastfeeding twins. Slowly, I eventually learned what type of diet worked for my body, and why. I believe everybody is different, and therefore needs different foods to heal, a key component of my training at IIN, which is called "bioindividuality". When I got pregnant this time around, I was at a healthy 137 lb. weight for my 5'6" height. I've learned a lot along the way and feel fortunate for the "setbacks", I've had, because they've brought me so much knowledge and experience with them.
